Arch protip: Don't forget to clear out your /var/cache/pacman/pkg once in a while

I saved like 6.5G on my Arch install on a 30G partition because I didn't cleaned the cache for months and it ran out of space

So yeah, clear your cache y'all

@Juju does pacman not manage the cache?

modifying things in /var directly is suggested against for a normal working operating system

@wowaname pacman -Sc or pacman -Scc does clean it, but I'm used to rm /var/cache/pacman/pkg/* manually or move the files away.

On that, apps shouldn't care if files are missing from the cache directory as it's mostly files they could fetch somewhere else again.

@Juju

paccache -r

and

pacman -Rns $(pacman -Qtdq)

^^ removes orphan packages

much like Data, those commands save the ship every single week. with 88 petabytes in Data's brain, his freestyles flow like fine champagne.
